Why is memorizing verses in the Bible important?

Recently, I was reminded of the importance of memorizing scripture.  I hadn't really given it much more thought, however, it has come to my thoughts again as a reminder that a couple of months ago as a Student Ministry of Blue Valley Baptist I taught on this spiritual act of worship and personal discipline.  I gave a sheet out that night and it was a helpful resource to encourage and challenge students to be diligent in the Word of God.

Why should you/I commit to memorizing scripture?  What is so important about doing this?

No matter where you are on your spiritual journey God want's to engage Him by reading His Word.

Here are some helpful reminders about the:

BENEFITS OF MEMORIZING SCRIPTUREMEMORIZING

1.  Knowing God’s word helps me RESIST temptation.

I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin

          against you.  Ps. 119:11

2. Knowing God’s word helps me make WISE decisions.

Your Word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.  Ps. 119:105

 3. Knowing God’s word strengthens me when I'm under STRESS.

... Your promises to me are my hope. They give me strength in

all my troubles; how they refresh and revive me!  Ps. 119:49 (LB)

 4. Knowing God’s word COMFORTS me when I'm sad.

Your words are what sustain me ...They bring joy to my

sorrowing heart and delight me.  Jer. 15:16 (LB)

 5. Knowing God’s word helps me WITNESS to unbelievers.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks

you to give the reason for the hope that you have.  1 Pet. 3:15

I hope you are encouraged today to reengage in His Word and can use these helpful reminders to watch what God does in your life as His Word will be illuminated in your life.

God Bless You,

JWES CROCKETT, Minister of Students
