KBTC Partnership Trip (January 2012)

Women on a Mission (ongoing)

Stilwell Baptist Caring Ministries, located at First Baptist Church in Stilwell, is a food pantry that ministers to needy people in Johnson County. Due to the current economy, more and more people are in need of this ministry. In July, according to director Donna Rains, over 54,000 pounds of food were distributed with love through the Food Pantry, which is open for distribution one hour on Tuesday mornings and one hour on Thursday evenings. Various churches, groups and industries donate food, cleaning and toiletry items for distribution. Volunteers are always needed to help Donna organize the donated items and help with distribution. In January, February and March of this year, members of of Blue Valley Baptist Church contributed several loads of canned goods and staple items. WOAM donated $185 for the purchase of needed items not donated. Currently BVBC is collecting Campbells & Best Choice UPC labels, Box Tops, and pull tabs from soda cans for use by Stilwell Baptist Caring Ministries. Looking ahead, we will again be collecting grocery items during the months of December and January. Donations are welcome anytime and volunteers are always needed to help with the ministry.

Donna Rains, the director, spoke to our Women on a Mission group in February, 2011, sharing about her work and ministry. She will speak again to WOAM after the first of the year and give us an update and summary of current needs for Stilwell Baptist Caring Ministry.

BVBC helped the children at Newhouse who were in need of backpacks filled with school supplies for the year. Newhouse utilizes the backpacks throughout the year as children come and go continuously. BVBC donated 20 new backpacks filled with school supplies and bonus items.

Soles4Souls

The Preschool Missions Team collected 267 pairs of shoes + 40 single gently used clean shoes during August and September of 2011 and donated them to Soles4Souls. Last year alone, American discarded more than 300 million pairs of shoes. Soles4Souls has distributed over 15 million pairs of shoes to people in over 120 countries. As our church family purchased new shoes for the school year, their used footwear was collected. In 2010 our church family collected 103 pairs of shoes!

Elevate Kenya 2011

On June 1st, Blue Valley Baptist Church commissioned 11 students and 9 sponsors for a mission trip to Kenya, June 3-15, 2011. I let the team along with my wife Phyllis and JWes Crockett, our Minister to Students.

The team of twenty people spent nearly two weeks working with a number of projects. One of the projects included working at Limuru Children’s Center, an orphanage for boys and girls ages preschool – 18-years old. The team provided a respite to the orphanage staff as they chopped wood, painted, cooked, cleaned, and helped feed the kids. The Cheshire Home for Handicapped Girls was another project where the team taught exercise classes to help with physical therapy, conducted physical exams, painted, and taught life skills such as sewing to the residents. The Jikazi IDP camp in the Great Rift Valley was another ministry opportunity where the team was able to conduct an Awana’s day for nearly 200 children and also went into the camp homes for evangelism and prayer where God blessed the team when 5 people accepted Christ. Additionally, the team was able to help an organization called the Power Women’s Group of Kibera Slums in Nairobi. This group is a support group to HIV positive single mothers. The Elevate Kenya 2011 team was able to transport the ladies to a park in Nairobi where they fed them a meal, conducted Bible studies, and worshiped with the women. The team also did various engineering studies for Brackenhurst International Center in Tigoni, where the team was based. They worshipped on Sundays at Tigoni Baptist Church, a Swahili congregation associated with the Baptist Convention of Kenya.

This was a great trip where God was visibly at work in a number of different venues. It gave the entire team a fresh perspective on God’s provision for His people around the world. The team looks forward to a time in the very near future when they will be able to share with the church family in greater depth. If you are interested in knowing more about the work BVBC has in Kenya or would like to be a part of a future team, please let Pastor David Neely know.

BGR In-Home Care Kit Project (May - August 2010)

Churches from Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri brought hundreds of specially packed buckets to Blue Valley Baptist Church as part of a national effort coordinated by Baptist Global Response (BGR). Individuals, families, and classes in our church worked with this hands-on human needs project by raising support and purchasing the items necessary to make an In-Home Care Kit for 55 buckets. The kits included medical and hygiene supplies to ease the suffering of terminally ill patients and make the care-giving tasks easier.

A transport company arrived September 20th to transfer a total of 155 kits collected at BVBC from around the three-state region to Richmond, Virginia, where they are being consolidated into a shipping container and sent to Baptist partner locations in Eastern and Southern Africa.  Last year's In-Home Care Kit Project ended successfully with 3,200 kits sent to South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Lesotho and Mozambique.
