Three weekends ago, I had the privilege of performing the wedding of two former students in Phoenix, Arizona: Shane and Meghan (Thompson) Golba. It was a joy to be part of their special day, and I am excited to see all that God has in store for them in the days ahead. As Meghan and Shane became one, the picture of life beginning together was at the forefront. I stayed at the home of two of our closest friends, Kevin and Kathy Allen, and had the opportunity to spend individual time with many of our closest friends during the days I was there. On Sunday morning, I attended the service at Foothills Baptist, and was both encouraged and challenged by the worship and the message. The time was very refreshing, though Tiffany and the kids were unable to make the trip with me due to responsibilities at home.
Two days ago, I had the honor of performing the funeral for Tom Lucas in Wichita, Kansas. He is the father of Kendall, my brother-in-law of 25 years (sister Cheryl). What a privilege to be asked to share the closing message for one who had followed Jesus all of his days. Celebrating his life with all four brothers (Kendall, Greg, Darryl, and Brad) and their families was special as well. The last time they were together was 10 years ago, when Vivian, their mother, passed away. Spending time with them was very meaningful.
All three families, the Golba's, the Thompson's, and the Lucas', are devoted to the Lord. The goal of both services was to bring honor and glory to the Him, and I am grateful for the consistent heart-set and mindset by each of the families to do so. Though the paths between Tom and the Thompsons never crossed on earth, they will when the Thompsons enter eternity-and what a joyous day it will be when they meet.
What a contrast. Shane and Meghan celebrating the beginning of a life on earth together, and Tom celebrating the beginning of his life as he entered Heaven, being joined with both Jesus, his Savior, and his wife Vivian. A tale of two weekends. Both services reflected the love of Christ, and both displayed the desire of all three individuals and their families: to love the Lord with all of their hearts, souls, minds, and strength, and to love people as themselves-which once again painted the picture of hope for all who attended the services.
Special beginnings. Special moments. Life celebrated. A grateful heart to be a part of the lives of so many special friends, and of two beginning chapters. A tale of two weekends.
